Lagar
The Portuguese term for a traditional open vat (first in granite and later in cement) in which the grapes are trodden. Many of the great Port Vintages continue to use these traditional vats and the grapes continue to be crushed by foot. The scarcity of labour, however, threatens this practice.
Light
The term used to describe a smooth, low alcohol and watery wine that is easily drunk.
Loureiro
An ancient and high quality grape variety grown throughout almost all the region. It produces musts with a pronounced aroma that is characteristic of the grape variety. The wines are citrus in colour, with fine and elegant aromas that range from hints of citrus fruits (lemon) through floral (freesia, rose) and honey (bouquet). The wines have fresh fruity flavours, albeit slightly tart, and are harmonious, full-bodied and persistent. It is a grape variety of medium vigour that combines very well with the majority of grafts used in the region. It is a very fertile variety that produces, on average, two blossoms per shoot, leading to long, heavy and medium-compact bunches, thus making this variety an extremely productive one. It is a medium or early budding grape variety (after Alvarinho, Avesso and Azal Branco and before Pedernã. Batoca and Trajadura) and medium ripening (after Pedernã and Avesso and before Batoca and Azal Branco).
